The human family tree is actually a tangled bush

In short: Forget the linear ladder of progress. Human evolution isn't a straight line from ape to man; it is a complex, branching bush of overlapping species. We are the sole survivors of a diverse tribe that once shared the planet with various cousins, many of whom lived alongside us.

The traditional image of human evolution as a simple ladder—where one species replaces another in a straight line—is a scientific oversimplification. Modern biologists and anthropologists prefer to describe our history as a 'family bush.' This means that instead of a single chronological series, the human lineage diverged into multiple branches at various points. For example, while we are now the only living members of the Hominini tribe, fossil evidence shows we were preceded for millions of years by diverse groups like Ardipithecus and Australopithecus.

This complexity is underscored by our history of co-existence and interbreeding. Homo sapiens did not emerge in a vacuum; we lived contemporaneously with other members of our genus, most notably H. neanderthalensis (Neanderthals). Genetic and fossil evidence confirms that our ancestors continued to interbreed with Neanderthals and other species within the Homo genus as they migrated out of Africa—a journey that began roughly 60,000 years ago.

The survival of Homo sapiens over more powerful relatives like Homo erectus (which died out about 30,000 years ago) is often attributed to complex developments. In the last 100,000 years, the emergence of complex language, art, and agriculture allowed our ancestors to overcome extreme environmental difficulties, such as the Ice Age, which eventually led to the extinction of other hominin species like the 'Hobbit' (Homo floresiensis), which survived until about 12,000 years ago.
