Why your energy bank account follows a strict cosmic ledger

The First Law of Thermodynamics: Internal Energy, Heat, and Work · 5:44 · Video: Professor Dave Explains · Watch at the source

In short: The universe operates on a strict accounting system where energy can never be created or destroyed, only moved. While heat and work are the messy transactions of the physical world, the first law of thermodynamics ensures that the final balance always remains perfectly reconciled.

The first law of thermodynamics is fundamentally the law of conservation of energy. It asserts that if heat is treated as a form of energy, the total energy of the universe remains constant. In practical terms, this means any change in a system's internal energy must be balanced by the energy it exchanges with its surroundings. Scientists view this as a strict accounting system: the change in internal energy (ΔU) equals the difference between energy deposits (heat, Q) and withdrawals (work, W).

A key nuance lies in the distinction between 'state functions' and 'path functions.' Internal energy is a state function, meaning its value depends only on the current state of the system (like temperature or pressure), not how it got there. Conversely, heat and work are path functions. For example, a gas in a cylinder can reach a final expanded state by doing maximum work against a piston or by doing no work at all. In both scenarios, the change in internal energy remains the same, but the specific combination of heat absorbed and work performed differs based on the process taken.

This principle was vital for historical engineering, such as the Wright brothers' 1903 engine design. It allows us to understand that while heat and work cannot be stored independently because they are tied to specific processes, internal energy can be stored within a system—much like potential or kinetic energy. While the first law allows for many theoretical states, it is the second law of thermodynamics that ultimately dictates which of those states actually occur in nature.
