Why the universe has substance instead of just moving at light speed

The God Particle or Higgs Boson and Higgs Field Explained | Quantum Physics · 5:11 · Video: Brain Station Advanced · Watch at the source

In short: Without a specific invisible field, every fundamental particle in the universe would zip around at the speed of light, unable to cluster into atoms. The Higgs field is the cosmic glue that allows matter to have mass, fundamentally shaping the structure of everything we see.

The Higgs boson is the carrier particle for the Higgs field, a scalar field that permeates all of space. Unlike the electromagnetic field, which has a specific direction, the Higgs field only has magnitude. This unique property means its carrier particle has a spin of zero, making it the only elementary particle with no spin. This discovery was a cornerstone in completing the Standard Model, the primary framework used to describe the subatomic world. The particle was first theorized in the mid-sixties by Peter Higgs. It is also known as the Higgs particle. Its discovery was a major milestone for the European particle physics laboratory CERN. This breakthrough was essential for understanding the structure of matter.

The mechanism works through interaction. Elementary particles acquire mass based on how strongly they interact with the Higgs field; different particles have different interaction strengths, which results in the variety of masses we observe in nature. This process is central to the electroweak theory, which unifies the weak nuclear force and electromagnetism. The Higgs boson itself is quite massive, weighing about 125 billion electron volts, which is roughly 130 times the mass of a proton. The boson is a force carrier that mediates interactions between other particles. For instance, electrons exchange photons to interact. One production method involves two colliding protons emitting W bosons. These then collide to create the Higgs boson.

The field's behavior is tied to the history of the universe. In the high-energy environment immediately following the Big Bang, the field's energy was higher when it was at zero. As the universe cooled and lost energy, the field shifted to a nonzero state. This transition allowed particles to finally acquire mass. Scientists spent decades searching for this evidence, finally confirming the Higgs field's existence on July 4, 2012, using the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The Higgs boson is also known as the God Particle in popular culture. This nickname comes from a 1993 book by Leon Lederman. The Large Hadron Collider is the most powerful particle accelerator currently in existence. It confirmed the mechanism that gives rise to mass.
