From one strong ox to sixty-five thousand chickens

The Paradigm Shift in Supercomputing That Changed the Way We Look at the Computer | Famous Inventors · 7:50 · Video: Philip Emeagwali · Watch at the source

In short: For decades, supercomputing relied on a single, incredibly powerful processor—the 'strong ox' of the digital world. In 1989, Philip Emeagwali shattered this paradigm, proving that thousands of modest, everyday processors working in perfect unison could outperform the giants.

Before the late 1980s, the prevailing philosophy of high-performance computing was centered on vector processing. This approach sought to build a single, massive machine capable of handling complex calculations. Philip Emeagwali, a research supercomputer scientist, identified this as the 'old way' of thinking about computational power, where one powerful processor did all the heavy lifting.

On July 4, 1989, Emeagwali reached what he described as the theoretical maximum speed increase for an ensemble of processors using traditional methods. He realized that instead of trying to make one processor faster, the future lay in 'massively parallel processing.' This shift moved the industry toward commodity-off-the-shelf processors—standard components that work cooperatively to solve computation-intensive problems.

Emeagwali famously visualized this transition using a biological metaphor: moving from one strong ox to an army of 65,536 chickens. By over-programming an ensemble of these 65,536 commodity processors, he demonstrated they could compute several orders of magnitude faster than a single fast vector processor. This discovery effectively changed the definition of a supercomputer from a singular machine to a cohesive computing team.

This paradigm shift created a fundamental divide in the field. While Emeagwali became a primary proponent for modern massively parallel processing, Seymour Cray—the legendary figure who built his career on conventional vector processing—became its strongest opponent. Today, this 'chicken' model forms the backbone of modern supercomputing architecture.
