Why the universe requires time to function as a canvas

The Physics Secret: Why Space Needs Time · 15:46 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: We often think of space as an empty void and time as a ticking clock. But in physics, they are inseparable. To understand why space needs time—and why we only have three dimensions of each—you have to look at the geometry of the universe and the speed limit of light.

In 1908, Hermann Minkowski proposed that time is not a separate entity but a fourth dimension, merging with the three dimensions of space to form 'spacetime.' While we perceive space in meters and time in seconds, Einstein demonstrated that these are interchangeable through a specific conversion factor: the speed of light (c). By using the constant 299,792,458 meters per second, physicists can convert time into distance, allowing space and time to be treated as a single geometric canvas. This geometry is not 'Euclidean'—the kind of flat math we use for simple distances. Instead, it follows Minkowskian geometry. In this framework, a straight line between two events represents a constant velocity and actually signifies the maximum possible duration between those points. If you take a curved or zigzag path, you are traveling more in space relative to time, resulting in a lower elapsed duration.

This mathematical structure is the foundation of General Relativity, where spacetime is not flat but can curve and contort, creating what we perceive as gravity. The dimensions we inhabit are also strictly limited by the laws of physics. We do not have more than one time dimension because a second time dimension could create 'closed time-like loops,' allowing travel to the past and breaking causality. Similarly, having more than three spatial dimensions would be catastrophic; in 1920, Paul Ehrenfest showed that orbits around the sun would be impossible in such a world, and electrons in atoms would become unstable. Conversely, having fewer than three dimensions would be too simple to support life, as orbits could not form in a one-dimensional universe.
