A celestial laser capable of erasing life from Earth instantly

The Scariest Star type in the Universe! · 14:01 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: Imagine an explosion so powerful that its energy rivals the Big Bang. If one occurred within 200 light-years of our planet, it would fry our atmosphere and end all life on Earth in a heartbeat. We wouldn't see it coming; we would only experience the impact.

The universe is governed by a constant struggle between gravity, which seeks to collapse matter, and radiation pressure, which pushes outward. A star remains stable as long as it has fuel to maintain this balance. However, once a massive star—specifically one exceeding 30 times the mass of our sun—runs out of hydrogen, its core collapses under gravity's weight, triggering a hypernova.

A hypernova is significantly more violent than a standard supernova, releasing between 10 and 100 times more energy. Unlike a typical spherical explosion, a hypernova creates a collimated beam of gamma rays. These are the most energetic forms of electromagnetic radiation known to science. Because these beams travel at the speed of light, there is no warning; the moment the radiation reaches Earth, it would be fatal.

The mechanism behind this 'cosmic laser' involves extreme physics. As the dying star rotates rapidly, its magnetic field becomes twisted. This forces ejected charged particles to follow a helical path along the poles of rotation, where the magnetic field is least tangled. The rapid changes in direction produce high-energy photons. These bursts can last from fractions of a second to several hours, releasing as much energy in seconds as our sun will produce over its entire 10-billion-year lifespan.

While these events are rare—occurring only a few times per galaxy every million years—the sheer scale of the universe makes them a persistent threat. With at least 200 billion galaxies, hundreds of thousands of hypernovae occur annually. While we detect about one gamma ray burst every day on Earth, every single one recorded to date has occurred outside our own galaxy.
