Looking at the stars is a form of time travel

The Sun, Stars & Universe | What Light Years Are · 6:37 · Video: Cognito · Watch at the source

In short: When you gaze at the night sky, you aren't seeing the universe as it is now. You are looking into the past. Because light takes time to travel across the vast vacuum of space, every distant object acts as a cosmic time capsule, revealing history rather than the present.

A light-year is a unit of distance, not time. It represents how far light travels in a vacuum over one Earth year. While the International Astronomical Union recommends using the Julian year—exactly 365.25 days—there is no universal consensus on which specific year to use for the calculation. One light-year covers approximately 9.461 trillion kilometers, or about 6 trillion miles. This measurement is essential because space is too vast for standard units like miles or kilometers to be practical. For example, the nearest star to our Sun, Proxima Centauri, is about 4.22 to 4.3 light-years away. This means the light reaching our eyes today left that star over four years ago. Because it requires roughly 8.3 minutes for solar radiation to arrive, our planet observes the nearest star in its state from 8.3 minutes prior. As distances increase, the time delay becomes staggering. The Andromeda galaxy is roughly 2.5 million light-years away, showing us the universe as it was 2.5 million years ago. In 2016, the Hubble Space Telescope observed GN-z11, a galaxy located 13.4 billion light-years away. Because it is so distant, we are seeing it as it appeared only 400 million years after the Big Bang. By studying these distant objects, astronomers can effectively peer back into the early history of the universe.
