Your dreams are not secret messages; they are data management

The Truth About Dreams Freud Got Wrong · 11:17 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: Sigmund Freud famously argued that our dreams are coded windows into our deepest desires, often laden with hidden sexual symbolism. However, modern neuroscience suggests a far more practical reality: your brain isn't trying to tell you a story—it is busy performing a high-stakes maintenance task on your memories.

While Freud viewed dreams as symbolic manifestations of the subconscious, contemporary science largely rejects the idea that dream symbols hold specific meanings. Instead, researchers point to the unique neurochemistry of REM sleep—which accounts for about 20-25% of our total sleep time—to explain why dreams feel so bizarre yet emotionally intense. During this phase, the prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for logic and reasoning, is effectively turned off. Simultaneously, the hippocampus and amygdala remain highly active, creating a state where we experience vivid emotions without the ability to apply rational thought.

The 'profound' feeling of a dream may be a chemical illusion. During REM sleep, levels of norepinephrine—a chemical essential for memory formation—decrease significantly, which explains why most dreams are forgotten upon waking. However, serotonin levels also drop during this period. Neuroscientist Dr. Robert Stickgold notes that this specific decrease in serotonin biases the brain to perceive whatever it is experiencing as highly important, even if the content is nonsensical.

If dreams aren't secret messages, what is their biological purpose? One leading theory suggests they function like a computer defragmenting a hard drive. Every day, we are bombarded with thousands or even millions of sensory inputs. The brain must distinguish between information vital for survival and the trivial noise of daily life. REM sleep provides the window for this sorting process: it helps build and store important long-term memories while simultaneously deleting unimportant ones to keep our mental systems efficient.
