Why your coffee gets cold and no machine is perfect
In short: From your smartphone battery to the expansion of the universe, thermodynamics governs every movement of energy. It explains why heat always flows toward the cold and why 100% efficiency is a physical impossibility. Understanding these laws reveals the fundamental rules of how our world operates.
Thermodynamics emerged in the 19th century as scientists sought to understand the mechanics of steam engines. It is a branch of physics specifically focused on the energy and work of a system. Unlike kinetic theory, which looks at small-scale gas interactions, thermodynamics deals with large-scale responses that can be observed and measured in experiments. This distinction is vital for engineering, where the behavior of entire systems—like car engines or refrigerators—is the primary concern.
The field is structured around four primary laws. The Zeroth Law establishes the concept of thermodynamic equilibrium, providing a large-scale definition of temperature. The First Law relates kinetic and potential energy to the work a system performs and the heat it transfers. This law introduces the concept of internal energy and the state variable known as enthalpy. While the First Law allows for many possible states, the Second Law narrows these possibilities by introducing entropy.
Entropy is the defining variable of the Second Law, which stipulates that the total entropy of a system and its environment cannot decrease. While entropy can remain constant during a reversible process, it must increase during any irreversible process. These laws collectively explain why machines cannot be 100% efficient and dictate the pressure and temperature relationships of gases during compression or expansion. These principles were well-understood enough to be utilized by the Wright brothers in their early engine designs.
