Army ants forgo permanent nests to build living shelters with their own bodies
In short: Army ants are constantly on the move, making traditional nest-building impossible. Instead of settling down, these insects have evolved a bizarre and highly effective alternative: they use their own bodies to construct temporary, living shelters.
Because army ants maintain a nomadic lifestyle, they cannot construct the static, permanent nests found in other ant colonies. To survive and protect their queen and larvae while traveling, they physically link together to form structures.
This behavior allows the colony to function as a mobile home, adapting to their environment in real-time. By utilizing their own bodies as building material, these ants maintain the necessary protection and climate control required for their brood without ever needing a fixed location.
