In short: Settled in 1818 as a humble river landing, Van Buren, Arkansas, evolved from a strategic fuel stop into a key metropolitan player. Today, this Crawford County seat balances a rich 19th-century history with a modern economy driven by manufacturing, food processing, and a bustling logistics network at major interstate junctions.

The origins of Van Buren trace back to 1818, when David Boyd and Thomas Martin first settled the area. Initially known as Phillips Landing, the community served as a vital fuel depot for steamboat traffic along the Arkansas River. By 1831, it gained a post office named for Martin Van Buren, who was then the Secretary of State and a future U.S. President. The town was formally incorporated on January 4, 1845, and John Drennen, a key figure in its development, later donated land for the Crawford County courthouse on the condition that the town remain the county seat.

The city's geography has defined its history, both in commerce and conflict. Situated at the junction of Interstate 40 and Interstate 540, Van Buren has leveraged its location to build a robust industrial sector. Major employers like Simmons Foods, USA Truck, and Baptist Health anchor the local economy. However, this position near the Arkansas River also brings challenges; in 2019, the river crested at nearly 41 feet, causing significant flooding. The region is also situated on the edge of Tornado Alley, evidenced by a devastating 1996 F3 tornado that damaged approximately 1,800 homes.

Beyond its industrial output, Van Buren preserves a distinct historical identity. The downtown area features the King Opera House, a Victorian-era performance hall, and the Crawford County courthouse, which holds the distinction of being the oldest functioning courthouse west of the Mississippi River. The city has also served as a backdrop for various films, including scenes from The Blue and the Gray and Biloxi Blues. With a 2023 population estimated at 24,138, the city continues to grow, maintaining its role as the second-largest city in the Fort Smith metropolitan area while honoring its 19th-century roots.
