How to flatten 3D landscapes into 2D maps for easier analysis
In short: Visualizing functions with multiple inputs can be difficult because they exist in three dimensions. This video explains how contour plots allow us to project complex surfaces onto a two-dimensional plane.
While single-variable calculus focuses on functions like y=x², multivariable calculus introduces equations with more than one input, such as f(x,y)=x²+y²- These shapes are inherently three-dimensional and can be harder to conceptualize.
To solve this, mathematicians use contour plots, also known as level curves. By mapping these out in a two-dimensional domain, you can create a clear visual representation that serves as a guide for sketching the full 3D graph of a function.
