The 20 building blocks that construct the machinery of life
In short: From structural support to complex biological functions, proteins are the workhorses of every cell. This video breaks down their molecular architecture and explains how simple chains of amino acids create the diversity of life.
Proteins are composed of long chains of amino acids linked together. While they perform a vast array of roles in the body, every protein is built from one of 20 different types of amino acids.
Each of these 20 amino acids shares a common basic structure consisting of an amino group, a carboxyl group, and a unique side chain known as an R group. It is this specific variation in the R group that determines each amino acid's distinct properties and the resulting function of the protein molecule.
