Your body can host a virus without ever sounding the alarm
In short: An asymptomatic COVID-19 infection means your body is actively battling a disease and potentially spreading it without you feeling a single sniffle or ache. It is a silent biological process where the virus operates under the radar, making it one of the primary reasons the pandemic spread so rapidly.
Asymptomatic carriage occurs when an individual remains healthy throughout the entire course of a COVID-19 infection. While it is not a universal experience for every disease, it is a significant phenomenon for SARS-CoV-2. Estimates suggest that at least 20% of all people infected with the virus never develop symptoms, ranging from 1 in 5 people to as high as 30% in some reports. This silent transmission makes the virus difficult to contain because carriers can pass it on to others without realizing they are unwell.
It is vital to distinguish asymptomatic infections from pre-symptomatic ones. While an asymptomatic person never feels sick, a pre-symptomatic person is in the 'incubation period'—the window between initial infection and the onset of symptoms. In both cases, the individual can be highly contagious. Research suggests that children and adolescents may be more likely to experience asymptomatic infections than adults, and genetics may play a role in determining whether a person develops symptoms or remains a silent carrier.
Clinical data from a study of 79 asymptomatic patients in Wuhan, China, revealed that these individuals could be of any age, ranging from 9 to 96 years old. While many showed no symptoms, some developed mild or moderate symptoms during hospitalization. Notably, some asymptomatic carriers showed 'patchy shadowing' on CT scans. Factors like hypertension and other comorbidities may predict whether an initially asymptomatic person will eventually develop symptoms, highlighting the complexity of how the virus interacts with different human bodies.
