Why stopping time would actually leave you in total darkness

What if Time Stopped for Everyone, EXCEPT YOU? The Terrifying Journey! · 11:44 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: If you could freeze the world around you, you wouldn't become a superhero. Instead, you would face a terrifying physical reality: the air would turn into a solid wall, and the world would vanish into absolute blackness. Here is why the physics of time makes this impossible.

If time were to stop everywhere in the universe, you would have no way of perceiving it. Because your brain processes are tied to the passage of time, your internal experience would remain unchanged. There would be no 'trace' of a pause because perception requires the movement of time to occur.

However, if you were the only person for whom time continued to move, the physical consequences would be immediate and lethal. You would be unable to breathe because air molecules would cease moving, effectively becoming a static mass. Even if you managed to maintain a small buffer of moving air around your body, you would be trapped in a sphere of total darkness. This is because light rays would stop moving outside that buffer, meaning no photons could reach your eyes from the rest of the world.

Attempting to move beyond this buffer would be like hitting a brick wall. Because no molecules would be moving and no time would be occurring in the frozen zone, physical movement would be impossible. This scenario violates Einstein's special relativity, which dictates that the laws of physics remain constant and that light moves at a fixed speed. Causality prevents time from passing at different rates within the same reference frame.

In reality, time does vary based on reference frames. Gravity and velocity cause measurable differences; for example, a clock at a higher elevation ticks slightly faster than one in Death Valley, California, which sits about 60 meters below sea level. While these differences are negligible to humans, they can be measured by atomic clocks capable of detecting differences in the hundreds of billionths of a second.
