The universe is pulling us toward a massive hidden destination

What is the GREAT ATTRACTOR? Will It Absorb us? What's DARK FLOW? · 15:57 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: Our galaxy is currently traveling at more than 600 km/s toward a mysterious gravitational source. While this sounds like a cosmic collision course, the reality of our journey involves a complex tug-of-war between massive superclusters, the expansion of spacetime, and a phenomenon called dark flow.

The Milky Way is not stationary; it is being pulled by the 'Great Attractor,' a gravitational anomaly first identified in the 1980s. By observing the movement of our galaxy and 400 others, scientists calculated that the source must possess a mass exceeding 10 million billion suns. Because the Great Attractor is obscured by the dust and matter of our own galaxy, researchers had to use radio, infrared, and X-ray observations to locate it. These tools revealed the Norma cluster, a rich concentration of galaxies at the heart of the attraction.

However, the Norma cluster alone lacks the mass to account for our velocity. The primary driver is actually the Shapley Supercluster, discovered by Harlow Shapley in the 1930s. Situated 650 million light-years from our world, this 8,000-galaxy grouping weighs four times as much as the Great Attractor, making it the largest formation inside a billion light-years. Additionally, the CIZA project identified the Vela supercluster as the source of the final 10% of our movement.

Despite these massive gravitational pulls, we are in no danger of being 'absorbed.' The expansion of spacetime, driven by Dark Energy, is occurring faster than our velocity toward these clusters. Furthermore, a phenomenon known as 'dark flow'—the idea that galaxies are moving in a preferred direction toward something outside the visible universe—is likely a data error rather than a physical reality. On a human scale, these cosmic movements are so slow and their effects so tiny that they have no impact on our solar system.
