Was there anything before the Big Bang? Three distinct theories.
In short: If time began at the Big Bang, asking what came "before" might be as nonsensical as asking what is north of the North Pole. Yet, physicists have developed three compelling frameworks to explain how our universe emerged from the void or a previous state.
The first hypothesis suggests a cyclic or "bouncing" universe. Rather than a singular origin, this framework depicts the Big Bang as a single occurrence within an unending sequence of cosmic growth and shrinkage. Starting from a minuscule singularity holding every bit of energy and matter, the cosmos would stretch across billions of years before shrinking back down to repeat this process indefinitely. However, current observations show the universe's expansion is not slowing down, meaning this model relies on the Lambda CDM model being incomplete.
A second possibility is the multiverse theory, rooted in "eternal inflation." This suggests an infinite spacetime expanding faster than light. While inflation ended in our local area—expanding our universe by a factor of 10^78 in a very short period—it may continue indefinitely in other regions. This perspective suggests our reality is merely one "bubble" amidst a vast foam of others, where distinct physical rules might apply to each individual one.
The third theory proposes that the universe emerged from nothing via quantum fluctuations. At the subatomic level, virtual particles constantly pop in and out of existence by borrowing energy from the vacuum. Cosmologists speculate that if the laws of quantum mechanics hold, spacetime itself could have nucleated probabilistically from a state where no matter, space, or time existed. A 2014 paper by three Chinese physicists provided a mathematical proof for this "spontaneous creation," noting that in a closed universe, the positive energy of matter is balanced by the negative energy of gravity.
