Your stool is a diagnostic window into your internal anatomy

What Your Poop Reveals About Your Health · 25:57 · Video: SciShow · Watch at the source

In short: While it is a topic many prefer to avoid, your waste is a primary indicator of systemic health. By observing changes in color, consistency, and shape, you can identify everything from simple dehydration to serious issues involving the liver, pancreas, and colon.

The large intestine serves as a critical processing center where the body concentrates waste by absorbing water. When muscle contractions in this area do not function correctly, waste remains in the colon longer, becoming more concentrated and resulting in hard, pebble-like stool. This physical change is a primary indicator of constipation, even if the individual is still able to pass small amounts of waste. These physical changes occur because the large intestine is responsible for waste concentration. Even passing a small amount of waste can still be classified as constipation if the stool is hard.

Color and texture provide specific clues about organ function and nutrient absorption. For instance, oily or greasy stools that are difficult to flush may suggest that the body is failing to digest fat properly. This can be triggered by infections, celiac disease, or more severe issues like pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. Conversely, stool that is consistently pencil-thin may indicate a physical blockage in the colon, whereas occasional thinness is often just a result of normal muscle contractions. This specific consistency can also be a sign of an underlying infection. Furthermore, these symptoms might point toward a malfunctioning gallbladder.

Dietary factors and medications frequently mimic medical symptoms, making context essential for interpretation. Many color changes are caused by specific bacteria, food types, or artificial colorings—so much so that doctors can often identify specific beverages during colonoscopy preparations. However, certain signals remain high-priority: black, tarry stool can indicate blood loss in the stomach or small intestine, though it is frequently caused by iron supplements or bismuth-containing medications like Pepto-Bismol. Patients are often told to avoid certain beverages the day before a colonoscopy to prevent these color shifts. This is because the bacteria in your colon also contribute to the final appearance.
