Modern humans, or Homo sapiens, likely first emerged in Africa approximately 315,000 years ago. However, the human evolutionary path is less of a straight line and more of a complex 'family bush' than a simple tree, making it difficult for experts to agree on a full chronological series of species leading to us.
The fossil record reveals that for much of history, multiple hominin species lived simultaneously. We were preceded by various lineages, including Ardipithecus and Australopithecus, and once lived alongside Neanderthals.
