How cheetahs achieve incredible speeds for short, intense hunts
In short: Cheetahs are the fastest land animals, capable of reaching 114 km/h. This video explores the specialized physical adaptations and intense physiological demands that allow these cats to accelerate so rapidly.
A cheetah can accelerate from 0 to 96.5 km/h in under three seconds. To support this, they possess elongated spines for longer strides and legs that are proportionally longer than other big cats. They also use nonretractable claws and hard foot pads for traction, alongside a long tail for balance.
The physiological cost is high. During a chase, a cheetah's body generates heat faster than it can be dissipated, and they may take 60 to 150 breaths per minute. Consequently, such rapid chases generally do not exceed 200 to 300 meters in length.
