Why do razor blades dull so quickly when cutting soft hair?
In short: It seems counterintuitive: how can a steel blade, far harder than human hair, lose its edge so rapidly? While we once assumed blades simply wore down through friction, MIT engineers have discovered a more violent reality. It is not just gradual wear, but a rapid process of microscopic chipping.
For decades, the prevailing assumption was that blades dulled through simple wear—the edge gradually becoming rounded as it rubbed against a surface. However, research from MIT engineers, including Professor C. Cem Tasan, reveals that the mechanism is far more complex. Even though human hair is approximately 50 times softer than the stainless steel used in razors, it can cause the blade to deform and fail through a process of chipping. This phenomenon occurs even when razors are coated with extremely hard substances like diamond-like carbon. Consequently, the material's microscopic structure plays a vital role in how the edge behaves.
Using a scanning electron microscope to observe the process in extreme detail, the team found that the failure begins with minuscule cracks. These cracks often form at the borders between microscopic regions in the steel that have slightly different properties. Once an initial crack is triggered, the blade becomes highly vulnerable to further damage.
The severity of this chipping depends on specific variables: the angle at which the blade meets the hair and whether the hair strikes a pre-existing defect in the steel's microstructure. Because these cracks accumulate and widen quickly, the razor loses its sharpness much faster than simple wear would suggest. This discovery offers a potential roadmap for manufacturers to design longer-lasting blades by using more homogenous, uniform materials that minimize these microscopic structural defects. Researchers believe that creating more chip-resistant blades requires using more homogenous materials. This approach could help prevent the initial cracks that lead to rapid failure.
