The ghost particles that prove our understanding of reality is incomplete

Why do "Useless" Neutrinos Exist? · 14:11 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: Neutrinos are so elusive they can pass through the entire Earth without hitting a single atom. Yet, these nearly invisible ghosts are essential to our existence. By studying why they appear to vanish and reappear, physicists have uncovered secrets about mass and the very nature of time.

First theorized in 1930 by Wolfgang Pauli, neutrinos were born from a crisis in physics. During radioactive beta decay—where an atom transforms a neutron into a proton—scientists noticed that energy was seemingly disappearing. To preserve the law of conservation of energy, Pauli proposed an invisible particle must be carrying that missing energy away. Enrico Fermi later gave this 'ghost' its name: the neutrino.

Neutrinos are incredibly abundant, ranking as the second most common particles in the universe after photons. They are produced in massive quantities by nuclear fusion; for instance, when our sun fuses four hydrogen protons into a helium nucleus, it generates two positrons and two neutrinos. Because they carry no charge and interact so weakly with matter, they can travel across galaxies virtually unimpeded.

For decades, scientists faced the 'Solar Neutrino Problem.' Detectors on Earth were capturing far fewer electron neutrinos than predicted by solar models. The mystery was solved by discovering that neutrinos come in three 'flavors'—electron, muon, and tau. As they travel, they undergo 'neutrino oscillation,' changing from one flavor to another.

This oscillation is a profound clue about the universe's architecture. For a particle to change its identity, time must pass for it during transit. This implies that neutrinos cannot be massless; they must possess a non-zero mass to allow for these transitions. While we know they have mass, the fundamental source of that mass remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in modern physics.
