The speed of light is a property of empty space

In short: Why is light the universe's speed limit? It isn't just a random number. By combining the laws of electricity and magnetism, James Clerk Maxwell discovered that light is a self-propagating wave created by the very fabric of reality.

The foundation of this discovery lies in four equations that describe how charges and magnets interact. One key principle, derived from Carl Friedrich Gauss, explains how electrical charges create electric fields. Another, Gauss’s law for magnetism, establishes that magnetic poles always come in pairs; magnetic monopoles do not exist. These laws describe the static world, but the magic happens when things start moving.

When a charge moves, it creates a magnetic field. Conversely, Faraday’s law shows that a moving magnet creates an electric field. Maxwell’s profound contribution was adding a second term to Ampere’s law: he realized that a changing electric field also generates a magnetic field. This creates a feedback loop. A changing electric field produces a magnetic field, which in turn changes and produces another electric field. This cycle creates a self-propagating wave.

The speed of this wave is determined by two fundamental constants of nature: permittivity (epsilon naught) and permeability (mu naught). While permeability quantifies how easily magnetic force lines traverse a vacuum, permittivity denotes the vacuum's opposition to electric field creation. These are inherent properties of the universe that must be measured rather than derived.

Using multivariable calculus, Maxwell calculated that the velocity of this wave is the square root of the product of these two constants. This reveals a striking truth: the speed of light is essentially the speed at which electric and magnetic fields can ripple through the vacuum of space. It is the ultimate speed limit because it is dictated by the physical 'resistance' and 'conductivity' of the universe itself.
