Quantum mechanics suggests the universe splits every time you make a choice

Why Physics Says You Have Infinite Copies · 17:12 · Video: Arvin Ash · Watch at the source

In short: Is your uniqueness an illusion? According to the Many-Worlds Interpretation of quantum physics, every subatomic interaction could trigger a split in reality. This means there may be infinite versions of you existing simultaneously, each inhabiting a different branch of a constantly dividing cosmic tree.

The concept of multiple selves stems from how we interpret the behavior of subatomic particles. In the quantum realm, objects are described by wave functions—mathematical widgets that represent probabilities rather than certainties. While the Copenhagen interpretation suggests these possibilities only 'collapse' into a single reality upon observation, the Many-Worlds Interpretation argues that no collapse ever occurs. Instead, every time a quantum system in superposition is measured or observed, the universe branches into multiple realities where every possible outcome actually happens.

This perspective is favored by approximately 20-30% of physicists. If this theory holds true, it implies that our universe is just one branch of a myriad of parallel universes. Over time, these microscopic quantum interactions could compound, leading to vastly different circumstances for your life across different branches. While you are biologically unique in your current timeline, physics suggests there could be 'squillions' of versions of you going about different business in these parallel realms.

Beyond quantum mechanics, other theories support a multiverse. Eternal cosmic inflation—part of the Lambda CDM model—suggests that during the Big Bang, space expanded exponentially by a factor of about 10^30x in a fraction of a second. Because quantum mechanics ensures randomness, different regions may have inflated at different rates. While inflation stopped in our region, it might continue indefinitely in others, potentially creating an infinite number of universes where copies of you are bound to exist.

These theories vary in scientific standing. The Many-Worlds Interpretation is a major framework for understanding quantum mechanics, while the Brane Multiverse (based on String Theory) and the Cyclic Multiverse (proposing cycles of expansion and contraction) currently lack observational evidence.
