Your body has a dedicated waste management system that isn't sweat

Why You Can't Really Sweat Out Toxins · 5:15 · Video: SciShow · Watch at the source

In short: While hot yoga and saunas promise a deep internal cleanse, your skin isn't actually designed to be a waste disposal unit. The idea that we can 'flush' toxins out through perspiration is largely a marketing myth that ignores how our internal organs actually manage chemical waste.

The human body possesses specific, highly efficient mechanisms for neutralizing and removing toxins. While sweating is a prominent physiological response to heat, it is not a primary method for waste excretion. Instead, the kidneys and liver serve as the body's main filtration systems, processing and eliminating substances that could otherwise become harmful.

Sweat is primarily a cooling mechanism. The majority of sweat produced by the body's approximately three million eccrine glands is more than 99 percent water. While sweat can contain trace amounts of hundreds of different substances—including some that are toxic—these levels are often so low that they do not pose a significant health risk. Chemist Joe Schwarcz notes that the presence of a substance in sweat does not equate to a meaningful detoxifying effect.

However, research does show that different types of physical activity affect what is released through the skin. A study involving 12 healthy young adults found that dynamic exercise (running on a treadmill) resulted in significantly higher concentrations of heavy metals like nickel, lead, copper, and arsenic in sweat compared to sitting in a sauna. Interestingly, mercury levels remained unaffected by the sweating method. This suggests that while sweat isn't a primary detox route, the intensity and type of movement can influence the specific minerals excreted, even if the liver and kidneys remain the heavy lifters.

Ultimately, 'detox' plans that rely on sweating are often criticized by scientists as being vague and lacking physiological basis. Because toxins are not easily visible, it is easy to market products that claim to 'flush' them out, but the body's actual biological architecture prioritizes internal filtration over external perspiration.
