Why COVID-19 keeps returning even during the hottest summer months
In short: While many respiratory viruses peak in winter, COVID-19 has developed a strange habit of spiking twice a year. Despite the heat, summer surges are becoming a recurring pattern, driven by a complex mix of waning immunity, indoor air conditioning, and increased travel.
Since 2020, COVID-19 has transitioned from a pandemic to an endemic state, but it has maintained a unique dual seasonality. Unlike the flu, which typically surges only in winter, COVID-19 often sees spikes in both the summer and winter. While the exact reason for this summer seasonality remains a mystery to scientists, several contributing factors have been identified.
One primary driver is the waning of immunity. By mid-to-late summer, the protection gained from a previous infection or a vaccination from the prior fall may have decreased considerably. This vulnerability, combined with the emergence of new, more transmissible variants, creates a window for renewed infection waves.
Human behavior and environmental changes also play a critical role. As temperatures rise, people spend more time in air-conditioned indoor spaces. To keep these spaces cool, windows are often closed, which restricts the ventilation and air circulation that typically helps reduce virus spread. Additionally, summer travel increases exposure to new regions and different populations. Travelers might also misattribute mild symptoms, such as headaches or fatigue, to jet lag rather than illness, potentially spreading the virus unknowingly.
Despite these surges, the impact of the virus appears to be changing. Recent summer waves have shown a trend toward becoming milder, resulting in fewer hospitalizations and deaths compared to earlier years. This is likely due to growing herd immunity from a combination of prior infections and multiple vaccinations.
