Why a limbless reptile is biologically distinct from a snake
In short: At first glance, a legless lizard looks identical to a snake. However, beneath the surface, they belong to different biological categories. By examining specific anatomical features like eyelids and ear openings, scientists can distinguish these unique reptiles from their long, slithering cousins.
The classification of reptiles often relies on the presence or absence of limbs, but this is a simplified metric. While snakes are defined by their lack of arms and legs, they also lack external ear openings and the ability to close their eyelids. In contrast, the Russian legless lizard (known in Russia as the Scheltopusik) possesses these specific traits. If a cold-blooded, scaly reptile has an ear opening or the ability to blink, it is classified as a lizard rather than a snake. These small anatomical details are the primary markers used by scientists to differentiate these two groups.
Evolutionary history provides a fascinating context for these creatures. Fossil records confirm that snakes descended from lizards, making the legless lizard a biological 'in-betweener.' While they have lost their limbs, they retain behaviors and physical traits inherited from their ancestors. For instance, these lizards exhibit a characteristic rolling motion when moving or escaping—a behavior shared with alligators and traditional lizards, but one that snakes typically do not perform. This suggests that while they have adapted to a limbless lifestyle, their DNA still carries the blueprint of their four-legged predecessors.
These lizards also possess unique survival mechanisms, such as autotomy. The Glass lizard, a similar species found in Florida, can snap off its tail instantly if grabbed by a predator. This occurs at the cloaca, the common anal opening shared by reptiles and birds. Because the entire section from the cloaca downward is composed of tail, the animal can effectively abandon the posterior portion to escape. Furthermore, despite lacking the muscular strength to constrict prey like a snake, the Russian legless lizard is a ferocious carnivore that hunts mice by walking over them and swallowing them whole.
