Why your office chair might be making your knee pain worse
In short: Sitting for hours isn't just a sedentary habit; it's a mechanical stressor. While your desk job might not be the primary cause of degenerative changes, the constant bent position of your knees can exacerbate existing issues. Simple, targeted movements can provide relief without leaving your desk.
According to Eric Sampson, many office workers suffer from knee pain that stems from degenerative changes caused by sports or other recreational activities. However, the prolonged period of sitting in an office environment creates a specific challenge: the knee remains in a bent position for extended durations. To counteract this, the primary goal of office-based movement should be knee extension, which directly opposes the constant flexion of sitting.
There are three specific movements designed to be performed in a professional setting. The first is a seated knee extension stretch: sitting at the edge of a chair, extending one leg straight on the floor and pushing down on the kneecap with your hands for 10 seconds. This targets the back of the kneecap and the back of the knee. The second is a seated leg raise, which involves tightening the quad muscle to kick the leg out into extension and then returning it to the chair. This focuses on the mechanics of the quadriceps.
For those who can stand, a traditional quad stretch is recommended. This involves holding the back of a chair, keeping legs close together, and pulling the heel toward the glutes to feel a moderate stretch in the front of the thigh. For those with high-intensity jobs who cannot get up frequently, these can be done quickly right next to a chair. The strategy is consistency: performing these movements in short bursts throughout the day—such as a few sets in the morning and again later—helps alleviate discomfort by breaking up the static posture of the workday.
