The ancient science of mapping the human body onto the feet
In short: Reflexology operates on the principle that specific zones on the feet correspond to internal organs and systems. By applying precise manual techniques like thumb walking or rotation, practitioners aim to stimulate energy, blood flow, and nerves to alleviate stress and improve overall well-being.
Reflexology is an ancient practice with roots in early Chinese, Egyptian, and North American indigenous healing traditions. While it remained a traditional practice for centuries, the medical community and nursing professions only began exploring it scientifically in the 19th century. Today, it is categorized as a non-invasive complementary therapy, often referred to as regional therapy or reflex massage therapy.
The core mechanism of reflexology suggests that the body is divided into zones. For example, each side of the body has five zones that extend from the fingers down to corresponding toes. The practice posits that massaging these specific areas—such as the heart, liver, spleen, or kidneys—can stimulate circulation and nutrition. Research spanning the last 31 years (1991–2021) has shown the practice may have a moderating effect on anxiety, fatigue, and cancer, though it remains a subject of ongoing study.
Practitioners use specific manual techniques to target these reflex points. 'Thumb walking' involves infinitesimal movements using the thumb joint to maintain constant pressure. 'Finger walking' is typically applied to the top or sides of the foot rather than the bottom. Other techniques include 'hook and back up' for deep pressure on points like the spleen or gallbladder, and 'rotation on a point' for areas like the diaphragm line or solar plexus. A specialized 'press and slide' technique, attributed to Dr. Manzanares, is used to achieve deep, continuous pressure to induce parasympathetic relaxation.
