The map of your body is hidden in your palms
In short: Reflexology operates on the principle that specific points on your hands correspond to different organs and systems throughout your body. By applying targeted pressure and movement, you can perform a self-massage that targets everything from your spine to your adrenal glands.
The practice begins with physical preparation rather than immediate pressure. A foundational step involves relaxation techniques, such as clasping the fingers together and rolling them to release tension or 'popping' sounds caused by overuse. This is followed by specific movements like dorsiflexion—pulling from the base of the finger—or palm reflexion, which involve moving the hand in various directions including side-to-side motions.
The core technique involves 'thumb walking,' where you use your thumb to navigate a map of reflexes on the other hand. One primary path is the spinal reflex, which starts at the base of the hand and moves toward the tip. While the physical spine ends before the fingertip, the practice often continues all the way to the brain reflex. Another key area is the palmar aspect, where thumb walking covers the digestive reflexes, organ reflexes, kidney reflexes, and the adrenal gland reflex.
To target the fingers specifically, you create a claw-like shape with one hand while using the thumb of the other to rotate each finger toward yourself at its base. This can be performed quickly once mastered. The practice also includes 'finger walking'—simultaneously moving down each finger—and thumb walking between the metacarpals on the dorsal aspect (the back) of the hand. Every session concludes by returning to relaxation exercises, such as gentle rotations and a solar plexus hold.
This method treats the hand as a comprehensive map for self-care. By systematically moving from the base of the palm to the tips of the fingers and across the dorsal side, practitioners aim to address multiple bodily systems in a single session. It is designed to be portable enough to perform even during a commute.
