How a South American frog uses natural sunscreen to survive the heat

7 Cool Facts about Waxy Monkey Frogs | Pet Reptiles · 3:09 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: While most amphibians face death from dehydration, the waxy monkey frog has a specialized morning ritual. By coating its skin in a self-produced secretion, this resilient creature manages to endure intense sunlight and drying environments that would desiccate almost any other frog.

Native to regions such as Paraguay, the waxy monkey frog belongs to a large family of amphibians characterized by their distinct facial expressions and unique locomotion. Often appearing to scowl, these frogs possess long, extended legs and feet capable of grasping surfaces much like a primate, earning them their name. Unlike many of their relatives, they are not particularly skilled at hopping. Their unique physical movements are shared across this entire large group of animals.

The species has evolved a remarkable physiological adaptation to cope with the changing climate of the Amazon's lower rim, an area that has been drying out over the last several millennia. To prevent desiccation, the frog utilizes large glands located behind its eyes to secrete a waxy substance. Every morning, the frog rubs its limbs across these glands to coat its entire body in this layer, effectively cocooning itself against the sun's rays and retaining vital moisture. This adaptation is particularly vital because amphibians generally require daily access to water to survive.

This biological mechanism is currently a major focus of scientific interest. Researchers are investigating the compounds within the wax for potential use in developing new medicines and painkillers. However, this intense scientific interest has a significant downside: the widespread collection of these frogs for study is contributing to their increasing rarity in the wild. Although breeding programmes are underway, US-based captive reproduction has not yet been achieved, risking total extinction should wild numbers keep falling. The pressure to establish successful breeding populations in the United States remains a significant challenge for conservationists.
