Is your bow actually tuned, or is it just your technique?
In short: Precision archery requires more than just steady hands. Before you touch a single adjustment, you must ensure your own performance is perfectly consistent. Only once you are shooting flawlessly can you begin to diagnose whether the issue lies with the equipment or the archer.
The foundation of archery tuning is a fundamental distinction: you cannot tune a bow until the archer and the bow are performing in unison. True tuning begins with consistency in the archer's form. If your technique fluctuates, any mechanical adjustments you make to the bow will be rendered meaningless. The first step is to observe the flight path of your arrows closely, specifically looking for a 'center shot' where the arrow exits the bow in a perfectly straight line.
To diagnose mechanical issues, archers can use close-range testing. By shooting at a target from a short distance, the angle at which the arrow enters the target becomes a diagnostic tool. If the arrow enters at an angle, the bow or the equipment is out of alignment. For example, if an arrow bends and moves toward the right upon impact, it indicates the arrow is too weak for the bow's power, causing excessive bending during release.
Conversely, if the arrow bends in the opposite direction, it is considered too stiff. While the most direct solution is finding a new arrow with the correct spine weight using an arrow chart, there are mechanical workarounds. You can increase bending by adding heavier points to the front of an arrow, or you can stiffen a weak arrow by adding heavier fletching (veins) to the back. The goal is to reach a state where the arrow enters the target perfectly straight.
