Crafting the ultimate relaxation tool from water-resistant zebrawood

Bathtub Tray | Build It | Ask This Old House · 9:40 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Learn how to construct a custom bathtub tray designed for maximum comfort. This project demonstrates how to combine precise joinery with specific material selection to create a durable, functional piece of home furniture.

General contractor Tom Silva demonstrates the construction of a bathtub tray using zebrawood, chosen for its density, strength, and distinctive striping which makes it suitable for wet environments. The build involves complex woodworking techniques, including using a miter saw and table saw to prepare 15-inch pieces and 1/2-inch slats. The assembly relies on a dado created by a trim router to house the slats, and the use of mortises and floating tenons to secure the frame.

A key feature of the tray is a custom key-hole wine glass holder. This is achieved by using a template and painter's tape to guide a router with a 1/2-inch straight-cutting bit. To ensure the finished product withstands moisture, the wood is treated with a beeswax finish.
