Why a larger carrier might actually be scarier for your rabbit

In short: When transporting a rabbit, most owners instinctively reach for the biggest container available. However, providing too much space can increase anxiety and instability during travel. To keep your pet calm and secure, the goal is to find the smallest possible enclosure that still allows for basic movement.

Choosing the right transport method depends entirely on the duration and environment of the trip. Fabric carriers offer flexibility for quick urban walks or short cab rides, but they present a significant safety risk: rabbits can chew through the material to escape. For more substantial travel, solid carriers are preferred to prevent the animal from creating holes or escaping during transit.

There are three primary styles of solid carriers, each with specific mechanical advantages. Clam-shell carriers open like a bivalve and are highly recommended for airline travel because they typically fit under an airplane seat. Front-opening carriers are often better for long clinic stays, as they frequently include adjustable food and water bowls that can be positioned at different heights depending on the rabbit's size.

Stability is a critical factor in reducing pet stress. Because plastic litter boxes can slide across smooth carrier floors, experts recommend lining the bottom with sections of newspaper. This creates friction, preventing the internal components from shifting and ensuring the rabbit doesn't slide around during movement. Some advanced hard carriers even feature unscrewing tops for easier access.

The most important rule for rabbit transport is counter-intuitive: smaller is better. While a large cage seems more comfortable, a carrier that is too big allows the rabbit to move excessively, which can be frightening. The ideal size is one that provides just enough room for the rabbit to settle without having unnecessary space to tumble or slide.
