The Arctic-born dogs that were engineered for the Antarctic wilderness
In short: In the mid-20th century, the Argentine Army created a specialized breed of dog to conquer the frozen continent. These animals possessed an uncanny ability to sense invisible hazards beneath the ice, yet their existence was cut short by a sudden environmental mandate that led to their total extinction.
The Argentine polar dog was a deliberate creation of the Argentine Army, designed to haul freight across Antarctica. Its lineage was a strategic mix of the Spitz, Alaskan Malamute, Siberian Husky, Greenland Dog, and Samoyed. The project began in 1949 when Colonel Hernán Pujato proposed establishing year-round science bases to bolster Argentina's territorial claims. After completing a 'Polar Survival Course' in North America, Pujato imported 40 dogs to the continent, where they were selectively bred to endure extreme conditions.
These dogs were highly specialized for the Antarctic environment. They were capable of hauling weights similar to their own body mass for 8 to 9 hours a day. Beyond physical strength, they exhibited a unique sensory trait: an innate ability to detect cracks and holes hidden under thin ice or frost that were invisible to humans. To communicate, they used a high-pitched howling system where one dog would initiate a call and the pack would respond in a perfectly timed chorus. They were also fed a hyper-caloric, concentrated food called Pemmican, providing 5000 calories per serving, which was occasionally supplemented with seal meat.
The breed's end was as swift as its creation. The continent's non-native species had to be cleared by the Antarctic Treaty in 1991. By 1993 and 1994, the remaining dogs were relocated to mainland Argentina. However, because they had been geographically isolated since their inception, they lacked immunity to common diseases found in populated areas. Most of the relocated dogs perished shortly after arrival, and because the population was so depleted, the entire breed died out.
