How computer-controlled tools transform traditional woodworking into high-precision manufacturing
In short: Join general contractor Tom Silva in a San Francisco workshop to witness the creation of a stool using advanced digital fabrication, from 3D CAD design to high-pressure water jet cutting.
The process begins with 3D CAD software to design the finished piece. Prototyping involves using 3D printers for complex joints and hardware interfaces, while laser printers can create plywood models. By employing garnet-infused, high-pressure water streams, the process carves aluminium parts such as tenons and mortises. Finally, a CNC router mills the wooden top using various cutter heads before the pieces are assembled by hand.
