How a Jewish tennis star defied the Nazis while representing his national team
In short: Before the Czech Republic team as we know it existed, its predecessor, Czechoslovakia, navigated the turbulent politics of the 1930s. One player, Ladislav Hecht, faced an impossible choice when an associate of Adolf Hitler mistakenly invited him to join the German Davis Cup squad, a request he promptly rejected.
The history of Czech tennis in the Davis Cup is a complex lineage that predates the modern nation-state. While the current Czech Republic team was officially established in 1993 following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the country's participation in the tournament stretches back to 1921. This continuity reflects a deep-rooted sporting tradition that has maintained a presence in the World Group for nearly every year since the competition adopted its current format in 1981, a feat of consistency shared only with the United States.
During the 1930s, Ladislav Hecht served as both a player and captain for the team. His tenure, spanning from 1930 to 1939, occurred during a period of rising geopolitical tension. In 1938, Hecht received an unexpected overture from a high-ranking official within the Nazi regime. The official, seemingly oblivious to Hecht's Jewish heritage, attempted to recruit him to play for the German national team. Hecht refused the invitation, maintaining his allegiance to his own squad despite the looming threat of the Second World War.
The team's competitive success has been significant across its various iterations. Competing as Czechoslovakia, the team secured a Davis Cup title in 1980. Following the transition to the Czech Republic, the team achieved further international glory by winning the championship in consecutive years: 2012 in Prague and 2013 in Belgrade. These victories cemented the nation's status as a formidable force in global tennis, governed today by the Czech Tennis Federation, or Český tenisový svaz, which continues to oversee the team's development and international representation.
