In short: Originally built for the 1978 FIFA World Cup, the Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes in Córdoba has evolved from a controversial military-era project into a premier multi-sport hub. Today, it serves as a massive, modern venue for football, rugby, and international events, anchoring a sprawling 40-hectare sports complex for the province.

Commissioned by the military government of Jorge Rafael Videla in 1976, the stadium was designed by the Buenos Aires-based studio Sánchez Elía-Peralta Ramos. It was inaugurated on 16 May 1978, just in time to host matches for the FIFA World Cup. The project was part of a broader, costly infrastructure push; total construction expenses for the tournament reached US$ 520 million, a figure noted for being five times higher than the spending for the 1982 World Cup.

The venue underwent a major transformation between 2010 and 2011. To improve sightlines and modernize the facility, the field was lowered by 4 metres, the original 1978 scoreboards were replaced with video screens, and the capacity was expanded to 57,000. These upgrades were completed just days before the 2011 Copa América. The stadium was renamed in October 2010 to honour Mario Kempes, the Córdoba-born top goal scorer of the 1978 World Cup, following a campaign initiated by local journalist Claudio Menditto.

Beyond football, the stadium has hosted diverse events, including World Rally Championship stages, boxing title fights, and rugby union matches. It now sits at the center of the Polo Deportivo Kempes, a 40-hectare complex featuring an Olympic-size swimming pool, a field hockey stadium, and facilities for tennis and BMX. While local clubs like Talleres, Belgrano, Instituto, and Racing have their own grounds, they frequently choose this venue for high-stakes matches. The stadium's record attendance was set on 6 May 2013, when 62,000 spectators watched Talleres secure a promotion to the Primera Nacional.

The site remains a vital piece of Argentine infrastructure, hosting finals for the Copa Argentina and the Copa Sudamericana. Its evolution from a shallow, limited-view bowl to a fully covered, high-capacity arena reflects the shifting demands of modern sports, ensuring its relevance long after its initial purpose as a World Cup host was fulfilled.
