How a single port contract built an Indian multinational empire
In short: In 1969, Shashi Ruia secured a contract worth Rs. 2.3 crore to build a breakwater in Chennai. That single win launched the Essar Group, a conglomerate that would eventually expand from local infrastructure into global energy, steel, and telecommunications.
Founded in 1969 by Shashi and Ravi Ruia, the Essar Group has evolved into a massive multinational with assets spanning energy, metals, mining, and technology. The company's trajectory has been marked by aggressive expansion and significant financial restructuring. For instance, in 1995, the group entered the telecom sector via a joint venture, eventually managing various telecom circles in India before exiting the business entirely in 2011.
The group's journey has not been without intense financial complexity. By 2017, Essar Steel India Ltd. was identified by the Reserve Bank of India as being on a defaulter's list. Ownership underwent significant changes during this era; following a Supreme Court ruling in 2019, ArcelorMittal secured Essar Steel via a Rs 42,000 crore offer, beating Essar's Rs 54,000 crore tender. By 2020, reports suggested the group had successfully reduced its debt by 70% to approximately ₹12,000 crore.
More recently, the group has navigated complex geopolitical and financial landscapes. Following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and subsequent sanctions against VTB Bank, research indicated Essar moved management of its debt with the Russian bank from Cyprus to Mauritius. Despite these pressures, the group has pursued massive divestments, including a $2.05 billion deal with ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel in 2022 that reportedly left the group debt-free after clearing $25 billion in liabilities.
Today, the conglomerate maintains a diverse footprint, including Essar Oil UK and the establishment of Vertex Hydrogen in the UK to facilitate hydrogen supply for decarbonization.
