How to introduce a new color into your circular knitting project

How to Add a Color | Circular Knitting · 3:22 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Adding a second color to a circular project doesn't require a complex cast-on. Whether you are crafting simple stripes or intricate Fair Isle stranded patterns, the secret lies in how you anchor your new yarn and manage the tension of that very first stitch.

When working in the round, such as on a two-by-two ribbing headband, you do not need to restart the entire process to introduce a new hue. Instead, you can transition seamlessly by utilizing the final stitches of your current color. For simple stripes, you might choose to cut the yarn, but it is essential to leave a tail of four to six inches to allow for weaving the ends in later.

The technique changes slightly depending on your intended style. If you are performing stranded Fair Isle knitting, you will not cut the original color; instead, you will carry it throughout the project. To begin the new color, you insert your needle into the final stitch of the previous color, grab the new yarn, and anchor it with your fingers. You then drape the new yarn over the right-hand needle to pull up a loop.

A common challenge for beginners is the tension of that first stitch of the new color. Because it is only held by a tail and not yet integrated into the fabric, it may feel loose or stretchy when you complete the round. If this happens, do not panic. You can simply give the tail a gentle tug to tighten it. However, you must be careful not to over-tighten it; the goal is to maintain a pliable, stretchy fabric rather than creating a single, unnaturally tight stitch.
