Mastering circular knitting requires the art of ignoring your needles

How to Work with Double-Pointed Needles | Circular Knitting · 4:28 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Double-pointed needles can feel intimidating due to the sheer number of points and sticks. However, the secret to circular knitting is realizing that you are really only ever working with two needles at a time. The rest are simply there to hold your stitches while you wait.

To knit in the round, you must master the rhythm of switching between your working needles. You focus exclusively on the two needles closest to your body. You transfer stitches from the left needle onto the empty right needle, then rotate the project to continue the circle. To achieve this, you simply move the working yarn to the next stitch in line. This ensures you are always ready to begin the next sequence.

A common source of confusion is how many needles are actually in use. While some regions knit using only four needles, it is common in Western Europe, England, and the United States to work on three needles while using a fourth to perform the stitches. This distribution of work allows for continuous circular movement. This method ensures that the stitches are distributed evenly across the tools. It creates a seamless loop for your yarn to follow.

Because of this, many needle sets are sold in packs of five rather than four. This provides a vital spare; if you lose or break one of your primary needles, you can simply use the fifth needle to continue your project without starting over. Having this extra tool is a practical safeguard for any crafter. It prevents a single lost item from ruining your entire kit.

The process requires mental discipline. You must ignore the needles that are currently holding 'live' stitches, as they are merely waiting for their turn to be worked. Once you become accustomed to this rotation, the presence of the extra needles will eventually become unnoticeable. Some knitters choose to tuck the unused needles under their hand to keep them out of the way. This helps maintain focus on the active stitches.
