The tiny screw that prevents your bicycle chain from jumping gears

How to Adjust a Bike B-Screw | Bicycle Repair · 3:03 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: When shifting through your gears, a single misplaced screw can cause the chain to fall off entirely. While most cyclists focus on cable tension, the B-screw manages the critical gap between your derailleur and the cassette, ensuring smooth transitions between different sized cogs.

The B-screw plays a vital role in the mechanics of a rear derailleur by acting as a tensioner against the derailleur hanger. By turning the screw, you can physically push the derailleur outward or allow it to move inward. This adjustment is essential because it allows riders to use different sized cogs that meet specific manufacturer specifications without compromising performance.

The primary goal of the adjustment is to manage the distance between the jockey wheel—the small plastic cog on the derailleur—and the teeth of the largest cog in your gear set. If the B-screw is adjusted too tightly, the jockey wheel will sit too far away from the cassette. Conversely, if it is not adjusted properly, the components may clash or the chain may fail to shift correctly.

To achieve a smooth shift, you should aim for a precise gap. Most manufacturers recommend that the teeth of the plastic jockey wheel remain approximately two to three millimeters away from the metal teeth of the largest cog. Maintaining this specific clearance prevents the derailleur from hitting the gears and helps avoid the dangerous 'cross gears' state, where the chain is excessively flexed from one side to the other.

Performing this maintenance requires a simple Phillips head screwdriver. By tightening the screw, you move the derailleur out, and by loosening it, you move it down. Proper calibration ensures that as you shift from the smallest gear to the highest, the chain remains stable and does not fall off the cassette.
