How to prevent your bicycle chain from crashing into its spokes
In short: A misaligned derailleur is more than a nuisance; it is a safety hazard. If your chain is too loose, it can slip into the spokes, causing dangerous mechanical failure. Mastering the limit screws ensures your shifting remains smooth and, more importantly, keeps your drivetrain from catastrophic interference.
To ensure safe shifting, you must first address the L-screw, which stands for the lowest gear. When this screw is too loose, the derailleur can shift the chain directly into the spokes—a dangerous scenario for any cyclist. By tightening the L-screw, you pull the derailleur inward toward the center of the bike, preventing this dangerous overlap. It is vital to test this by physically pushing the derailleur to confirm the chain remains straight and does not enter the spoke area.
Fine-tuning the movement requires adjusting the cable tension via the barrel adjuster. If your shifting feels slow when moving into a higher gear, turn the barrel adjuster to the left to increase tension. Conversely, if the chain is slow to drop into lower gears, turn the adjuster to the right to create more slack in the cable. This subtle manipulation allows for the precise alignment necessary for smooth transitions between gears.
For a complete setup, the B-screw also plays a role by allowing the derailleur to sit correctly on the largest cog, a task that becomes more complex with varying cog sizes. When working with the front derailleur, start by using a five millimeter hex wrench to undo the cable. Once the cable is off, you can adjust the low limit screw to ensure the chain moves freely without excessive noise. Aim for a clearance of about a half millimeter from the crank, though the exact space may depend on your specific crankset. Finally, re-install the cable by pulling it tight with your fingers before testing the full range of gears.
