Improve your home's energy efficiency by upgrading your attic insulation

How to Beef Up Attic Insulation | This Old House · 4:02 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: General contractor Tom Silva demonstrates a cost-effective method for increasing attic insulation. By layering different materials and creating a raised storage platform, you can significantly improve your home's energy efficiency.

The process begins by addressing existing insulation, which in this case consisted of only about two inches of rock wool between the joists. To improve thermal performance, the joist bays are filled with loose cellulose insulation, raked level with the top of the joists.

For additional coverage, fiberglass insulation batts are laid perpendicular to the joists. To maintain storage utility, a raised platform is constructed using framing lumber, with fiberglass batts installed underneath to ensure the insulation layer remains continuous.
