How to bore a precise hole for a new door knob
In short: Installing a new passage set door knob requires more than just a screwdriver. To ensure a professional finish, you must master the art of boring holes through the door and mortising the jamb for the striker plate, ensuring every component seats perfectly without gaps.
To install a new passage set door knob, precision begins with the placement of a hole saw jig. General contractor Tom Silva recommends positioning the jig exactly three feet off the ground. Before drilling, you must determine the backset measurement, which should be set to either 2 3/8” or 2 3/4”, depending on your specific door style and personal preference.
The drilling process involves two distinct stages. First, use a drill/driver equipped with a 2 1/8” hole saw to bore through the door. It is vital to stop once the center bit emerges on the opposite side. You should then bring the hole saw to the other side of the door to finish the bore. Next, a 1” hole saw is used to bore a hole into the edge of the door to accommodate the latch.
Creating a clean housing for the hardware involves more than just drilling. To seat the latch plate, you must first outline its position on the edge of the door and use a chisel to remove the wood within that outline. If the striker plate does not sit flush, you may need to mortise out the door jamb using a chisel. Once all components are aligned and seated, the knobs are attached through the latch and secured with screws.
This process transforms a simple hardware upgrade into a lesson in structural precision. By carefully managing the depth and placement of each cut, you ensure the door functions reliably and maintains its aesthetic integrity.
