The precise geometry of storm protection

How to Board Up a Window · 3:26 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: Protecting a home from a hurricane requires more than just nailing wood to a frame. It involves specific measurements, structural overlaps, and hardware choices that differ based on your home's construction materials. Mastering these mechanics ensures your windows remain intact when the weather turns volatile.

Effective window boarding begins with precise measurement. For an accurate fit, calculate the width of every window—skylights and glass doors included—from the inner trim horizontally, plus the height from the windowsill to the upper trim's base. A critical rule of thumb is to add eight inches to both dimensions, creating a four-inch overlap on every side. However, if a window features an extended bottom sill, the height measurement only requires an additional four inches.

The installation process is dictated by the home's structural composition. For wood-framed houses, permanent anchors are required, while masonry structures necessitate plastic anchors. The depth of these anchors varies by window size: for wood frames, small windows require a 1.75-inch penetration, while larger ones need 2.25 inches. Masonry requires slightly shallower depths of 1.25 inches for small windows and 1.5 inches for large ones. These specifications ensure the plywood remains seated against the wall during high-pressure events.

For larger windows requiring two sheets of plywood, a structural seam must be addressed. Secure a two-by-four across the full joint by using 10-gauge, two-inch exterior deck screws placed at four-inch intervals. This prevents the panels from separating under stress. While humans have attempted to intervene in nature through initiatives like 'Project Stormfury' in the 1960s and 1970s to artificially dissipate hurricanes, these efforts failed, leaving physical fortification as the primary defense.
