How to extend the life of your water heater with one rod

How to Change a Water Heater Anode Rod | This Old House · 4:27 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: A simple maintenance task can prevent internal rust and add years to your water heater. This guide explains how to replace the sacrificial anode rod, a critical component that protects your tank from corrosion.

Plumbing and heating contractor Richard Trethewey demonstrates how to swap out the sacrificial metal rod that prevents rust inside a water heater. The process involves turning off the water and fuel supply, partially draining the unit, and using a ratchet wrench with a 1 1/16-inch deep socket to remove the old rod. If the rod is stuck, a steel pipe can be used for extra leverage. The new rod should be wrapped in Teflon tape before being tightened back into place. For installations with limited overhead space, a collapsible anode rod is a viable alternative.
