How to recreate Shaker elegance using simple pine and stair treads
In short: DIY expert Jenn Largesse demonstrates how to construct a classic dining bench inspired by museum-quality pieces. This project prioritizes traditional joinery and affordable materials to create a functional, elegant seating solution for your home.
Inspired by a Shaker bench displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this build focuses on simplicity and stability. Instead of expensive hardwoods, the project utilizes pine, common 1x stock, and four 1-by-11½-by-36-inch stair treads. The design features an angled backrest intended to provide comfort for adults while preventing children from tipping backward.
The construction avoids modern hardware in favor of interlocking joints. Spanning 67 inches in width, the finished bench can accommodate three adults or four children and is designed to tuck under a dining table. The entire process takes approximately four hours spread over two days.
