How to achieve perfectly straight cuts with a circular saw

How to Choose a Straight Edge for a Circular Saw | Ask This Old House · 3:10 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: General contractor Tom Silva demonstrates techniques for cutting straight edges using a circular saw, including how to build a homemade guide from scrap wood or convert your saw into a track saw.

To cut a straight line, you must account for the offset between the saw's guide and the blade. One method involves marking your desired length plus this offset, then running the saw along a straight scrap piece of wood placed on that mark.

For a more permanent solution, you can build a homemade track by gluing a 2-inch wide piece of plywood onto another piece of plywood. By running the saw alongside scrap wood on both sides, you can create an accurate guide that accommodates the necessary offset for each side.
