How to locate the hidden studs behind your walls

How to Choose a Stud Finder | Ask This Old House · 3:47 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: Finding the structural studs in your walls is essential for secure mounting. This video demonstrates low-tech and high-tech methods to identify stud locations using everything from your knuckles to digital sensors.

General contractor Tom Silva explores several techniques for locating studs. You can use low-tech methods like tapping the wall to listen for a solid, high-pitched knock, or looking for visual clues like patched nail holes in trim. For a more technical approach, you can use a magnetic stud finder to detect nails or screws, or a digital stud finder that uses lights to signal a stud's location and even its width.

If you find one stud, you can locate others by measuring 16 inches or 24 inches on center. Another method involves turning off the power and checking near electrical outlets or switches by sliding a screwdriver along the sides of the electrical box to find the mounting stud.
